Kevin's Sponsorship Page

Name: Kevin

DOB: 5/30/2018

Weight: 8 lbs

Adoption Fee: $400

I’m so happy you’re checking out my page! I am a very loving pup who’s favorite spot is curled up right next to you. After my long ride from Texas, I was very excited to explore my foster family’s home. I am very curious but very cautious – you might hear a little growl or bark from me if someone new is coming into the room. I have grown very attached to my fosters and really don’t like to be left alone, so I would do best with someone who works from home. Even though I have to be careful due to my heartworms, I love to roll around in the grass outside and explore all the new smells!

I do very well sleeping in a crate in the same room as my owners, but I need additional crate training to be left alone. I get very excited on the leash so some leash training would be great as well! I LOVE to spend the day sleeping, preferably cuddled up next to you in bed but a blanket or anything I can burrow in works too. When I’m extra sleepy, I can get startled if someone interrupts and comes in close and may growl or bark a bit. I recommend a gentle wake up so I can remember where I am

I eat my food pretty well, but sometimes need a little extra like a scrambled egg to be totally convinced. When I see you getting ready to leave or make my food, I turn into a jumping bean! If I jump or whine too much, a strong “Kevin NO” reminds me to calm down. I do great meeting new ladies but take a bit more time with men. I do okay with other dogs but get scared when they are bigger than me (and they usually are) and will probably run to you for protection. As a chihuahua, I also get protective of my owners and have separation anxiety – this will require some intentional training to help me realize that you come back when you leave. No worries, I am a very fast learner and great at adapting; I just need some owners who will understand and work with me on this.

Overall, I am an amazing companion and loving best friend. My foster owners have loved having me and are looking for someone to continue the love!

Please note due to my anxiety I need to go to a home with another dog.

Since Kevin is heartworm positive he will need to be treated at our clinic in Princeton.  Heartworm treatment consists of 3 injections. The first injection will be in roughly 30 days after coming into rescue. The the 2nd and 3rd injections happen 30 days after that. When a dog is going through heartworm treatment, they should be on "restrictions", meaning a lot of lap time, crate time and always on a leash. Heartworm disease is NOT contagious, it is transported via mosquitos.

Here is a great article explaining what heartworm is and how it's treated:

An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal.

All Ruff Start dogs and cats are spayed/neutered, up to date on age appropriate vaccines, microchipped, dewormed, and on monthly flea/tick and heartworm prevention (dogs) as well as heartworm tested (dogs).

Ruff Start Rescue is a foster based rescue. Animals are located in homes throughout Minnesota. We do not have a facility where animals are kept.
