Hi there, my name is Cane! I love long walks on the beach, endless sniffs, sunbathing, and plenty of cuddles. Throw in a good chew on a bone, treat or stick, and I’m in heaven! Need I say more?
Overall, I'm an active boy that thrives on activity and enrichment and would do best in a quiet household that can keep my mind busy. In turn, I'll provide you with snuggles, kisses, and loyalty.
I really enjoy being outside, especially when I can track squirrels, dragonflies, and ants going about their business. And don't even get me started about rabbits! I enjoy exploring new places and think every C-A-R ride is an opportunity for adventure. I do well in the vehicle and really look forward to being chauffeured about. Because of that, my ears perk up every time my humans dare to approach or open the door that leads into the garage!
I am crate trained and currently sleep there overnight and during the day when I'm unsupervised. And the nights I’ve been lucky enough to sleep in my foster's bed, I’ve done so so well! I know "sit", "down", and "touch" and am quickly picking up other tricks. When I eat breakfast, dinner, or any treats, I have learned to sit and wait nicely until I'm released. I walk and run well until I see something that interests me - I have a "squirrel" brain! Since I have some reactivity to passing vehicles, people, and dogs, I'll need a patient family to continue redirecting me with kibble or yummy treats. Loving both treats and toys, there is plenty to motivate me.
I'm still a puppy at heart and need consistent boundaries and stability. I will try to see what I can get away with, so I need you to hold firm and let me know you won't give in. When I have excess energy, I can get what my foster mom calls “a little naughty.” I might snag a couch pillow or shoe, or get a little jumpy or mouthy; these behaviors are easily redirectable with treats and toys. I do best if you're able to consistently and calmly redirect me. Better yet, with regular play dates with canine friends, my naughtiness has pretty much disappeared from my repertoire!
I love playing with other dogs and adjust my play style accordingly. I lived in a home with cats for about a week and did well meeting a cat during my time with my foster; I would likely be okay with a dog-savvy cat sibling with slow introductions. My ideal home would have few visitors while I'm learning boundaries and getting to know you.
If you are a confident leader looking for an adventure partner, snuggle buddy or maybe just a best friend, I’d love to meet you!
If you are interested in getting to know me better, please fill out an adoption application at www.ruffstartrescue.org/adopt/adoption-application. An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is not a binding contract.
